About Capt. Manohar Mahajan

Mediator & Arbitrator in Florida

Capt. Manohar Mahajan started his career in ocean transportation industry in 1973 after graduating from high school. After two years of training in the only floating academy in the whole of Asia, he went to sail on merchant marine ships as a cadet and then rose to the rank of a Captain. As a Captain of a ship, one is required to listen to and facilitate resolution of disputes between various parties on board, both in an informal and formal setting. He then went to the United Kingdom to achieve the highest studies in the maritime field – Extra Masters, which he passed with flying colors obtaining highest marks in the United Kingdom and awarded with Royal Society of Arts silver medal under the terms of Thomas Gray Memorial Trust. Through this education Capt. Mahajan was largely exposed to the International Maritime Law and Conventions as well as the business aspect of Ocean Transportation Industry.

Capt. Mahajan moved to the United States in 1986 and started a shore-based career in a shipping and a trading company. While managing sales and transportation of paper and forest products from the United States to South and Central America, he pursued an MBA degree in International Business under the auspices of University of Miami. Graduated in 1991 with a Salutatorian Award and was inducted to Beta Gama Sigma – the honor society for collegiate schools of business, an honor bestowed upon the top twenty percent of graduates nationwide.

Career Highlights

Capt. Manohar Mahajan then established a shipping company in 1992 through which ocean transportation services for various types of cargoes were provided worldwide. Capt. Mahajan was exposed to various aspects of business structures, business disputes and dispute resolution techniques both in the shipping industry and the corporate world. He was involved in various mediation and arbitration processes. He has also received a training from the Society of maritime Arbitrators in New York.

Since 1989 Capt. Mahajan has been closely involved with the Indian community in providing various types of services through the temples and organizations founded by him that he has emerged to be a well-respected community leader. As such he has helped in resolution of several family disputes in informal setting when approached by various community members.

In his 49 years of shipping career and 36 years of corporate world career, Capt. Mahajan has seen and handled various types of cases including injury on board ships, labor disputes, cargo damage claims and dispute, property damage claims and dispute, ship damage claims and disputes, insurance claims, arrest of ships, arrest of property, liens, nonperformance, shortage claims, quality of goods disputes, nonpayment disputes to name a few.

Capt. Mahajan is a fully educated and trained Mediator and Arbitrator. He is certified by the Supreme Court of Florida to provide Mediation services in Family Courts, Civil Circuit Courts, and County courts. He is also an authorized and trained Arbitrator.

In addition to professional engagements, Capt. Mahajan has been a two term president of Rotary Club Miami Airport through which he has handled grants worth over half a million dollars and continues to add on more, has worked very closely with the financially less fortunate communities and homeless less communities of south Florida, has been a two term president of Samundar Club of Florida (SCOF) and organization of shipping company managers and superintendents of Indian Origin in south Florida. He also founded Florida Indo Cultural Society Inc, in early 1990s spread peace and harmony in the local community through the culture of India. He also volunteers his time and management skills at International Hindu University, in south Florida, by chairing the Board of Directors. All in all, Capt. Mahajan has a great deal of experience in various fields and aspects of life.
